Aleene (Hall) Thornton, of Bismarck, Arkansas died on January 31. She would have been 101 years old on February 17, 2017. She was born to the late Noah and Edna Hall who had nine daughters and four sons. She married at the age of 16 to Y. B. “Young” Thornton. After sixty-six years of marriage and partnership, Young was called home March 11, 1999. This loss left a void in Aleene’s life that could not be filled. Aleene was predeceased by all her siblings, a grandson Wesley Dean Thornton, and a great-grandson Nicholas King. Cherishing her memory are the survivors; her sons, Leon and wife Jean of Bismarck; Harold of Bismarck; and her daughter, Diane Robbins and husband John of Hot Springs; ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren; a loving church family and many friends. The light of her life was her children, grandchildren and all babies.
Aleene was a lifetime member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church where over the years she served as a Sunday School Teacher, member of the choir, and a song leader. She loved the outdoors and had rather be outside working on her flowers, helping with the dairy, or mowing the lawn. She often said while growing up on the farm she was her papa’s “Boy” among all her sisters. She was very independent and had little patience with others who would not work or care for their own.
Having married during the Great Depression, she and her husband farmed and worked at odd jobs until World War II, as did many other Arkansans. She worked in the shipyards in California where she was one of the original “Rosie the Riveters”.
Upon returning to Arkansas, they operated a dairy farm for several years. She also worked for floral shops and restaurants in Hot Springs.
She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends. She lives on in the hearts and all those lives she touched.
Funeral services will be held at the Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Bismarck, Arkansas Saturday February 4, 2017 at 2:00 PM with the visitation starting at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Hickory Grove Cemetery.
